Welcome, my name is Phil, and in this video, I discuss the most elliptical galaxies that might be misclassified lenticular galaxies.

Lenticular galaxies, also known as S0 galaxies, represent a transitional type between elliptical and spiral galaxies. They feature a central bulge like ellipticals and a disk component like spirals but lack significant spiral structure due to depleted star formation. When viewed edge-on, these galaxies can appear similar to elliptical galaxies in terms of morphology, leading to frequent misclassification, particularly as E4-E7 ellipticals.

In galaxy classification schemes, ellipticals are traditionally categorised by their degree of elongation, with E0 being nearly spherical and E7 being the most elongated. Lenticular galaxies, viewed from the side (edge-on), often show a disk that mimics the elongation of elliptical galaxies in the E4-E7 range, where the galaxy appears flattened but featureless. This similarity in projected shape can easily lead to misidentification in imaging, especially when detailed structural components, such as the disk or bulge, are not visible or are obscured.

When a lenticular galaxy is seen edge-on, its disk and bulge are aligned with our line of sight, producing an image that looks like an elongated, featureless ellipse. The thin disk, devoid of prominent spiral arms, can appear similar to an elliptical's smooth structure. Without the ability to discern the edge-on disk, observers may assign it an elliptical classification based on its elongation.

Lenticular galaxies often have older stellar populations with little star formation, meaning they can lack the bright, prominent features typically associated with spiral galaxies, like star-forming regions or gas lanes. This lack of distinctive features makes it difficult to distinguish between lenticular and elliptical galaxies in optical wavelengths, especially if viewed edge-on.

In earlier galaxy classification efforts, such as Hubble's tuning fork diagram, the separation between ellipticals and lenticulars was not always well defined. This lack of clarity sometimes led to edge-on lenticulars being classified as elongated ellipticals (E4-E7), since early classification systems primarily used visual morphology without considering internal structures like the disk.

Modern methods aim to reduce this misclassification through more detailed observations. By examining the spectra of galaxies, astronomers can differentiate between the rotational dynamics of a lenticular galaxy's disk and the more random stellar motions in an elliptical galaxy. The presence of rotation often indicates a lenticular nature, even when edge-on.
