Welcome, my name is Phil, and in this video I discuss what blue-compact dwarf galaxies are.

Dwarf galaxies are small galaxies that contain only a fraction of the stars, gas, and dark matter found in larger galaxies like the Milky Way. They are among the most numerous types of galaxies in the universe but are often faint and difficult to observe.

Size and Mass:

Dwarf galaxies are significantly smaller than regular galaxies, typically containing anywhere from a few million to a few billion stars. For comparison, the Milky Way has about 2 trillion stars.
Their diameters are usually under 30,000 light-years, whereas large galaxies can span up to 200,000 light-years or more.

Luminosity:

Dwarf galaxies are much less luminous than larger galaxies due to their smaller number of stars, making them faint and harder to detect.

Dark Matter:

Like all galaxies, dwarf galaxies are believed to contain dark matter, a form of matter that does not emit light but exerts gravitational effects. In dwarf galaxies, the ratio of dark matter to visible matter is often higher than in larger galaxies.

Common Types:

Dwarf Elliptical (dE): Spheroidal in shape, with older, red stars and very little gas or dust, meaning they have little to no star formation.
Dwarf Irregular (dIrr): Have an irregular, often chaotic appearance, with ongoing star formation and more gas and dust than dE galaxies.
Dwarf Spheroidal (dSph): Similar to dwarf ellipticals but even fainter and more diffuse. These also contain mostly older stars.
Dwarf Spiral (dS): They are smaller and less massive than typical spiral galaxies, like the Milky Way, but still exhibit a discernible spiral structure.

Relationship with Larger Galaxies:

Dwarf galaxies are often found orbiting larger galaxies. For example, the Milky Way has several dwarf galaxy companions, including the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. They can be affected by the gravitational forces of larger galaxies, sometimes leading to interactions or mergers that can strip them of their stars and gas.

Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies are small, compact galaxies known for their intense bursts of star formation, which give them a distinctive blue color due to the presence of young, hot stars. They are rich in gas and have low metallicity, indicating they are in an early stage of evolution. These galaxies are important for studying galaxy formation and evolution, as they provide insights into the processes that shape galaxies over time.
