Welcome, my name is Phil, and in this video I discuss what rogue or free-floating planets are, if they can have moons and how we might detect them.
Free-floating planets, also known as rogue planets, are planetary bodies that drift through space without orbiting a star. Unlike planets in traditional solar systems, they are not gravitationally bound to any stellar object, making them wander through the galaxy independently. These planets may have been ejected from their original systems or formed in isolation, and their detection presents unique challenges due to their faintness and lack of a parent star to illuminate them.
The transit method, traditionally used to detect exoplanets by observing the dip in brightness of a star as a planet passes in front of it, can also be adapted to detect moons orbiting free-floating exoplanets, which are planets not bound to any star. In this scenario, astronomers would monitor the light from subtle dimming events caused by a moon passing in front of the free-floating planet.
