8 Steps to Set Up Your Lavalier Mic and Camera

We highly recommend the use of lav mics for interviews and documentaries, and that's exactly why we devoted a post about its advantages and how to set up a lavalier microphone to an external recorder. While lav mics are often used with external recorders, you can also connect it directly to your DSLR camera. Here's how to do it:

1. First, prepare your equipment. That includes your camera, lavalier mic, transmitter, and receiver.
2. Have the lavalier mic placed on your subject while you plug your receiver to your camera, connecting it to your preferred channel. In our video, you will see us connecting to Channel 3. Turn off the volume for your chosen channel.
4. Set your camera to either mic or line.
5. Set your camera to External since you're not using the camera's internal microphone.
6. Make sure that your camera's channel is the same as the channel you connected to. In our case, we have to set it to Channel 1.
7. Tell your talent to speak, so you can adjust your audio levels.
