For centuries, people have speculated about the mark of Cain. Some claim it was a physical mark. Others say it was a curse or a sign of race. But Scripture never says any of that.

In this study, we slow down and let the Bible speak for itself. We examine Genesis 4 in its context and look closely at the Hebrew word translated “mark” — ’owth — the same word used for the rainbow after the flood.

What we discover is unexpected. The mark of Cain was not added punishment. It was protection. It was not a curse. It was a sign of restraint and mercy.

Cain was judged for murder, but God did not abandon him. Even in exile, God placed a sign on Cain so that vengeance would belong to the Lord alone.

This study challenges long held assumptions and exposes dangerous ideas that have been added to the text. More importantly, it reveals something profound about the character of God — that even in judgment, He is slow to anger and rich in mercy.

If God marked Cain with protection, what does that tell us about His patience, His justice, and His grace?_______________________________________________________
Unforsaken is dedicated to exegetical Bible study grounded in discernment, sound hermeneutics, and the authority of Scripture. Our mission is simple: to discover what the Bible actually says about doctrine by reading passages in context and allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture.

We are not interested in repeating tradition for tradition’s sake, nor are we bound by what men in the past thought the Bible said. Instead, we carefully examine the text, its context, and its consistent message across Scripture to arrive at faithful, biblical conclusions.

Every teaching here is aimed at clarity, honesty, and depth—so believers can grow in confidence, test all things, and stand firmly on the Word of God.
