If Death Doesn’t Mean Death, the Gospel Falls Apart

What does the Bible actually mean when it says “death”?

Many Christians assume that death in Scripture doesn’t really mean death—that it means eternal separation or endless conscious existence in suffering. But the Bible never defines death that way. That definition comes from tradition, not from Scripture.

In this study, we examine how the Bible consistently uses the word death (Greek: thanatos) and what it actually means in context. From Genesis to Romans, from Ezekiel to the words of Jesus Himself, Scripture presents death as the opposite of life—not a different kind of life.

We look closely at key passages such as:

Romans 6:23 — “The wages of sin is death”

Genesis 2:17 — God’s warning to Adam

Ezekiel 18:20 — “The soul who sins shall die”

Matthew 7:13–14 — The broad way leads to destruction

2 Thessalonians 1:9 — Everlasting destruction

James 5:20 — Saving a soul from death

The Bible never calls hell “eternal life in torment.” It never redefines death as perpetual existence. Again and again, Scripture says the wicked will die, perish, and be destroyed.

If death doesn’t mean death, then words lose their meaning—and the gospel itself is emptied of its clarity. This episode continues the foundation of the series by letting Scripture define its own language, without philosophical or traditional additions.

Unforsaken is dedicated to exegetical Bible study grounded in discernment, sound hermeneutics, and the authority of Scripture. Our mission is simple: to discover what the Bible actually says about doctrine by reading passages in context and allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture.

We are not interested in repeating tradition for tradition’s sake, nor are we bound by what men in the past thought the Bible said. Instead, we carefully examine the text, its context, and its consistent message across Scripture to arrive at faithful, biblical conclusions.

Every teaching here is aimed at clarity, honesty, and depth—so believers can grow in confidence, test all things, and stand firmly on the Word of God.
