You’ve probably heard that Chinese is the most spoken native language in the world.
But did you know that “Chinese” is not a single language?
There are actually many distinct dialects of spoken Chinese.
The two most important ones you should be aware of are Mandarin and Cantonese.
Mandarin is spoken in mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.
Cantonese is spoken in Hong Kong and Macau.
Make sure you use the correct type of spoken Chinese when communicating with a Chinese-speaker or creating video or audio content.
Mandarin and Cantonese are not mutually intelligible, which means that a speaker of one will not be able to understand the other.
