Create a Document Index in Word || Create an index in Microsoft Word

A document index provides an overview of the key concepts in a document and allows interested readers to easily find the relevant passages in the text.

First of all, you need to identify all the words or phrases you would like to include in the document index and mark them accordingly.

Select the work or phrase to include in the document index. Then, from the References tab, the Index section, click on "Mark Entry". Repeat the same for all the words you would like to include in the document index in Word.

Select the Mark all option, from the pop-up window that appears, if you would like the index to reference all the instances that appear in the document, or simply Mark if you would like to include a reference only to the word or phrase on the current page.

You can also create a cross-reference in your document index by selecting the cross-reference option and type see and the word or phrase you would like to refer your reader to.

You can also format how the page numbers appear in your document index. From the Page number format section, select Bold or Italic if you would like the page numbers in your document index to appear in bold or italic.

Now, let's create the document index. Insert a blank page in your document. From the References tab, the index section, click on "Insert Index". From the pop-up window that will appear you can set the number of columns that you would like your index to include. You can select to span across one, two or multiple columns.
