The Convair F-106 Delta Dart developed from the F-102 Delta is an American all-weather interceptor aircraft manufactured by Convair and General Dynamics. The F-106 Dagger designed as the ultimate interceptor was the cornerstone of strategic air defense for the United States from 1959 to 1987, it was fitted with a Pratt & Whitney J75 that could reach a top speed of mach 2.4. The maiden flight of the F-106 took place on the 26th of December 1956 and it went into service on June 1959. Primary users were the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard.There were approx. 342 (2 prototypes, 277 F-106A, 63 F-106B) F-106 Delta Dart produced.The F-106 retired from active service from the Air National Guard in August 1988 and NASA in 1998. Cost per unit was approx. 4.7 million USD in 1973.The Convair F-106 Delta Dart proved to be the last dedicated interceptor in the U.S. Air Force service to date.
