QUANTUM SUPREMACY?
Lecture given as part of the "One Question, One Researcher" series for university students.
Google recently announced that it had achieved quantum supremacy with its "Sycamore" quantum computer. The machine reportedly performed calculations faster than any classical computer, present or future! This technology could herald a true revolution in many sectors: computing, medicine, chemicals, banking... But is it true? To find out, we need to lift the lid on this strange computer. Here, we discover all the most fascinating phenomena of quantum mechanics: Schrödinger's cats, entanglement, superconductivity, superfluidity... In this lecture without equations, we will explore all these strange properties step by step, allowing us to finally explain whether or not quantum supremacy now exists.
Julien Bobroff, born September 8, 1971, in Suresnes, is a French physicist and science communicator specializing in superconductivity, magnetism, quantum physics, and condensed matter physics. He is also a professor at Paris-Sud University and, along with Frédéric Bouquet, founded the research group "Physics Differently" at the Solid State Physics Laboratory of Paris-Sud University and the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research), whose aim is to develop new ways of presenting physics and research to the public.
