How do these mysterious objects that devour any matter that ventures too close form? From the stellar-mass black holes abundant in the Milky Way to the supermassive ones at the center of each galaxy, we observe their very luminous manifestations, from microquasars to quasars. Recently, a supermassive black hole was captured in a photograph by its shadow, and the echoes of black hole mergers reach us as gravitational waves. Yet, very little information exists about intermediate-mass black holes, and we are trying to understand how black holes with billions of solar masses could have formed at the very beginning of the Milky Way.
