Construction of the world's largest telescope has begun in the Atacama Desert in Chile. This European telescope will have a primary mirror 39 meters in diameter, made up of more than 700 individual segments. The construction and commissioning of this mirror, as well as many other components of the instrument, present numerous technological challenges. This giant European eye will allow direct observation of planets outside our solar system, all the way to the most distant galaxies at the edge of the Universe...
