THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE - Pierre-Olivier LAGAGE

Lecture of February 25, 2020
Level: General Audience / All Levels

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a joint mission of NASA and the European (ESA) and Canadian (CSA) space agencies. This telescope, which will be launched into space in 2021 by an Ariane 5 rocket, is poised to be one of the major observatories of this decade. During this lecture, I will first present the JWST and the challenges encountered in designing, building, and launching a cryogenic telescope with a 6.5-meter diameter primary mirror into space. I will then give some examples of potential scientific programs with JWST, such as the detailed study of the atmospheres of exoplanets or the observation of the first galaxies.
