Does the mayor have private police? 🚓🚨
On a Saturday morning in July of 2023, Georgia homeowner Jack Lecroy Sr received a surveillance notification on his phone that someone was walking onto his property in the 6000 block of Cascade Palmetto Highway. Lecroy, who was inside the home at the time, saw a man creeping up the driveway and heading into his lake house. Lecroy confronted the intruder, ordering him to “stay put” while he was on the phone with the police. The stranger reportedly told him “'Do you know who the F I am? I'm the Mayor, and I'll wait for my police to get here and see what happens then”. He then reportedly tried to walk away. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they identified the intruder as Khalid Kamau, who’d been the mayor of South Fulton since January of 2022. According to a police report, the mayor and Lecroy apologised to each other in the moments that followed. Kamau reportedly described the lakeside property as his “dream home” and stated an intention of buying it, adding that he’d taken the liberty of walking inside because he thought it was abandoned. He was arrested on criminal trespassing and burglary charges. He was booked at the Fulton County Jail and released after posting a bond of $11,000. As he left the jail, Kamau spoke to local reporters and lauded the professionalism of South Fulton police before apologising for the “negative attention” the incident had brought to the city.
