The Connecticut Incident That Left Two Officers Dеad
In October of 2022, Lieutenant Dustin DeMonte, Sergeant Alex Hamzy, and Officer Alec Iurato responded to a reported domestic dispute between two brothers at a residence in Bristol, Connecticut. Upon arriving at the scene, the three officers ordered Nathan Brutcher to put his hands up and step out of the house. Just a moment later, they were ambushed by Nathan’s brother, 35-year-old Nicholas Brutcher, who was dressed in camouflage and hiding in the bushes with an AR-15. Brutcher opened fire on the officers, k1lling 34-year-old Hamzy and 35-year-old DeMonte. Twenty-six-year-old Iurato was injured by the gunfire but managed to escape the path of the bullets. He returned fire, k1lling Nicholas at the scene, and survived his injuries. Investigators believe Nicholas lured the officers to the residence with the specific intention of shooting them, but they don’t know why. They are also unsure of whether Nathan Brutcher was involved in his brother’s sinister plan, and they’re still trying to figure out exactly what led up to the shooting. According to witnesses, the Brutcher's were involved in a disturbance at a local bar earlier that night. Nicholas Brutcher, who had a reputation for being a “rowdy” gun fanatic and a heavy drinker, had reportedly gotten into an altercation with Nathan after being kicked out of the establishment. Others have mentioned that Nicholas went to high school with Sergeant Hamzy, but authorities have yet to clarify whether this is true or if it has any significance in the case. As of late 2023, investigations by the Connecticut State Police and Office of the Inspector General were ongoing.
