Texas Man’s Attack on His Former Sister-in-Law and Her Family
On July 9th of 2014, Ronald Lee Haskell Jr. forced his way into the Harris County, Texas home of his former sister-in-law, Katie Stay, and her husband, Stephen. When the couple refused to tell him where his ex-wife was, Haskell shot them and their five children. All but one of the victims died from their injuries. Haskell fled the scene in the family’s car while the surviving victim, Cassidy Stay, played dead until she knew that he was gone. She then dialed 911 and warned law enforcement that Haskell had plans to go after other relatives. Police apprehended him before he could reach the homes of his ex-wife’s parents and brother, and he was charged with capital mvrder. During Haskell’s trial, the prosecution accused the defendant of carrying out a deliberate and coldblooded revenge scheme and argued for the death penalty. The defense based their case largely on Haskell’s mental health, claiming that the accused k1ller had heard voices telling him to commit the mvrders. In September of 2019, the jury found Haskell guilty as charged. During his sentencing hearing the following month, the defense urged the jury to impose a life term, which would force Haskell to spend his remaining years reflecting on his actions. Arguing for the death penalty, prosecutor Lauren Bard described Haskell as a “manipulative, selfish, narcissistic, blame-shifting monster” and accused him of faking mental illness. He was sentenced to death by lethal injection and remains on death row, awaiting an execution date.
