Professor Virchow and World Thrombosis Day.
Venous blood clots occur usually in the legs, pelvis, arms , or abdomen, and pulmonary emboli result when these clots break off from various locations and go to the lungs. Together these problems are referred to as venous thromboembolism (VTE). These problems represents the most frequent preventable complications following surgery or hospitalization. 60% of people will suffer VTE once they leave the hospital. Appropriate risk assessment and use of anticoagulation can prevent over 99% of deaths from these blood clots. Unfortunately, only 32% of the public is aware of these problems. Please join with the International Society of hemostasis and thrombosis on October 13th, 2023, which is Professor Virchow’s birthday to celebrate world thrombosis day. He published in1856 a treatise describing the risk factors that can lead to a venous blood clot.
