This is part 2 of a remarkable success story at Boston University regarding their program for preventing venous thromboembolism postoperatively in surgical patients. They have maintained a very low incidence of blood clots for the past 12 years. The protocol includes mandatory implementation of an evidence-based thrombosis prophylaxis risk assessment tool using the Caprini Risk Score. Anticoagulant use and length of prophylaxis are based on the score. The Highest-risk patients receive 30 days of prophylaxis. This video discusses the use of an enhanced Caprini Risk Score to address breakthrough events. David McAneny MD, FACS, Chief Medical Officer at @bostonmedicalcenter7260 presents an introduction discussing the origin of this program.
