WHAT IS YOUR ART SAYING ABOUT YOU? | The quote that changed the way I see my art
Hey friends! I'm back and I want to talk to you about your art... and what it may be saying about you without you even realizing! gasp It's no secret that artists use their art to express their feelings and cope with what they're going through in their lives, but what happens when you're doing this without realizing it? What is your art telling the world without you being aware?
Let me ask you a question: what do you feel is missing from your life?
I know, pretty personal, huh?
Okay, I’ll go first.
In the last few years I’ve found myself binge-watching shows like Friends, How I met your mother and Once upon a time.
I kept watching them over and over, and crying my eyes out each time they ended, followed by restarting them from season 1 (who needs new shows anyway??).
I thought it was because they were just that good but then I realized there was more to it than I thought.
One of my mentors recently mentioned a quote that changed everything for me:
“Whatever you think the world is withholding from you - you are withholding from the world.” - Eckhart Tolle
Mind = blown.
As if I’d just drank a memory potion bringing back a surge of memories and events from my life, I started seeing the patterns where this quote rang true.
So? Why did I keep watching those shows relentlessly and what does that have to do with what’s missing from my life?
Friendship. Those shows are about lasting friendships that bring joy to your life.
I kept watching them because I found myself feeling lonely and craving a close-knit group of friends of my own. But having to settle for a TV show instead.
Can you relate?
Then I started noticing other patterns earlier than that.
Years ago, when I lived with my parents, they argued constantly and it made me feel anxious. I craved having a family where things were calm, loving and welcoming (my family is great, they just argue often).
That’s when I started drawing the Fazbear Family featuring Markiplier and the spirits from Five Nights at Freddy’s. They had the family vibe I longed for.
Even earlier than that, I was in a relationship I wasn’t truly happy in, I craved to feel in love and being with someone you love as much as they love you.
That’s why I kept drawing so many artworks about couples from Bleach, Naruto and any other anime under the sun.
I felt the world was withholding these things from me, but instead of withholding them from the world, I gave them to the world in the form of artworks.
So. Let me ask you again, what is missing from your life and how is that showing up in your life and in your art? Let me know in the comments below! :)
