Dungeons - Torture, Execution and Imprisonment
Today one of the darkest elements of a castle that you can visit are the dungeons. These were created with the sole purpose of imprisoning enemies and those who have committed crimes. Dungeons were used as a place to house prisoners who were awaiting trial, their execution and also even their freedom. Many of those housed inside a castles dungeon were prisoners who were deemed to be of value, and who could be exchanged for a sum of money with a ransom. They were places where torture was administered too using horrific devices such as The Rack, The Manacles and many others. This was done in the dungeon so the screams of the prisoner could not be heard.
Dungeons were also a place where objects could be stored as they were cool and sometimes underground. Today they are incredibly to visit as you can imagine the suffering that went on inside of them. For example the Oubliette at Warwick Castle must have been intimidating and terrifying as prisoners were left in there to simply waste away and die. The Tower of London also features some of the most prominent dungeons in England.
