Snapping Spaghetti

There is a long history regarding the physics of spaghetti breaking, dating back to the days of physicist Richard Feynman. In short, when you snap a piece of spaghetti, you nearly always get more than two pieces... and reasoning behind this is still being worked on today. You can even find some recent peer-reviewed research articles on the matter. Anyhow, I wanted to see this for myself at high speed in slow motion, so I took the Phantom v2640 camera and snapped some different types of spaghetti. In order to capture the rotation during the breaking, I added some small markers on their surfaces with a fine point sharpie.

If scientists/enthusiasts want the raw data for computational analysis for a paper/ thesis, I'm happy to provide. I keep all the metadata, experimental details, and RAW pixel data. I personally would love for people to do full-field digital image correlation to get full-field strain/vibration. That sort of analyses should provide some much needed insight into this particular area of research.
