🔻 TRANSCRIPT
Did you know that lack of physical exercise and mental stimulation for your dog might well develop into health or/and behavioral issues? The ideas to prevent this are coming up now.
This is part 2 of 2 on how to be the best human for your dog. In part 1 we already discussed the biological, physical and mental needs. And raised the concern that lack of physical exercise and mental stimulation could develop into health or behavioral issues. If your specific situation makes it difficult to provide for this need, then I have some tips for you.
As a start, you should ask your vet, the local animal shelter or your groomer for good professional care references around you. Even better would be to find a doggy daycare or have a reliable dog-walker! Somewhere or someone who will ensure that your dog’s needs will be well taken care of. Which, besides the attention and affection, means allowing him or her to … simply be a dog :) which means basically: to bark ;) , to dig, to nibble and chew (on appropriate things), to sniff and run free, plus meet-play-learn (socialize!) safely with other dogs and humans too. Different walks and paths with different smells and discoveries will fulfill the mental stimulation part, supporting the dog’s development that will help to keep your dog happier and healthier.
On the list of most important needs - as they are very social beings - is to socialize! And have company! This is another reason why it’s great, when we can, to be able to count on a daycare and/or a few dog walkers sometimes! Although, dogs (at some point/sometimes) also have to stay home alone. That can be difficult for some dogs. And some of us have “discovered” that this capacity doesn’t necessarily come within their “program”. But with your help, little by little, your dog will learn to like it with positive reinforcement ONLY.
And if you want a great positive reinforcement tool to help improve your dog’s emotional state, then watch my video on how to make a Surprise Box!
Well. Note that, there is no good QUICKFIX pill for any problem in life!!!
But the solution is time, kindness and commitment to teach and help them. Some tasty stuffing into Kong toys (for instance, would be interesting to start with). That actually should also be put as a teaching activity or exercise on a daily basis! Remember good associations are KEY when it comes to facilitating and encouraging any learning.
It’s also useful to have an occupied dog when we need some “free space” … the same way we taught our dog to appreciate the time spent apart. Let’s note that these food-stuff-toys can really increase the well-being when used and taught properly. They are easily adaptable as we call it : enrichments for the everyday life. I have seen through my work with people and their dogs, that it has brought and still brings positive changes in the dog’s behavior and diversity - which also improves their life together.
Because we want to enhance the relationship with our companion animals, it’s up to us to be the best human - by providing the conditions and a frame that gives them what they need as well as allowing them to be themselves.
Oh, and by the way, never forget your Vet is there to help you with any behavioral or physical change you see in your dog. It might be that there’s a medical reason behind it, like a pain, parasite or something. Don’t wait!
