Pet shops, breeders, and animal shelters? From where should I get my dog? Watch this video to find out.

Hi, I’m Julie. I’m a Tellington TTouch practitioner for companion animals, a Bach Foundation Registered Practitioner and a certified dog trainer specialized in behaviorism. I’m here to help you enhance the relationship you share with your animal companion!

There are many places from where I could get my dog. In this video I will explore five sources. They are:

Pet shop
Newspaper or Online Ad
Friends or Acquaintances
Breeder
Animal Shelter

The first source is a pet shop. What can I say? Pet shops are the end of a production line. They are the retail store where the product is packaged nicely to make you think everything is great. The reality is that the product is coming from what's called a puppy mill, where the parents are locked away and forced to reproduce. These puppy mills are places of dirt, illness, misery, and death, where the only thing that matters is profit. The puppies have plenty of problems which aren’t obvious at first.

Let's quickly move on to the next source, which is a newspaper or online advertisement. Ads from individual owners may look like a good source although it's still very opaque. The origin of the dogs and cats is often unknown. It can again be puppy or dog trafficking, just like the pet shop. In advertisements, people can invent all sorts of stories, like making claims that the dogs come from a really good breeder, when in fact they don't. Again, we're back to production for profit. So, I must be aware that there's no guarantee where the animal comes from, little or no info on who the parents are, and even less info on how the parents are. Some people don't even ask questions. They simply ask about the product and pay for it to be delivered. This is just to say that is it is again quite opaque, with a lot of risk. Like the pet shop purchase, it's feeding business of life trafficking for the purpose of profit. I’m not saying it’s all bad, but in order to be sure, I must investigate more seriously.

Moving on now to friends or acquaintances. As they are closer, it's easier to speak to them, go see the dog, or the litter of puppies. You can ask them questions about the father, the mother, the history of the animals, the conditions, and all sorts of information about their environment. It's a really good sign if you find an environment that's full of diversity, noises, activities, lots of care, a nice ambience, kids and other animals. It's even better if your friends or acquaintances have the knowledge of how impactful all of this is on the dog parents and on the litter of puppies. The character of the environment will influence the basics. It will imprint in the animals the the confidence towards the world they’ll live in, which is the basis for future education. I must understand that the environment, the whole ambience, the healthcare, the character, diversity, and general samples of real life, are all ingredients for the dog’s future, and their inner balance. The time a pregnant mother is given will impact the litter, and an environment felt or interpreted as fearful will do a lot of harm. By the way, too many people believe, or have been told, that every mom dog must have a litter before being neutered, which is absolutely not true. What is true though, is that there are too many puppies left behind or euthanized because of the over-growing population.
