Dogs are intelligent, social and sensitive creatures. And they give us such great companionship. What do we owe them in exchange? Stick around to find out.
Hi, I’m Julie. I’m a Tellington TTouch practitioner for companion animals, a Bach Foundation Registered Practitioner and a certified dog trainer specialized in behaviorism. I’m here to help you enhance the relationship you share with your animal companion!
It shouldn’t be a surprise to you when I say dogs are intelligent, social and sensitive creatures. They often help us, teach us and guide us - in various situations - and since millions of years have given us companionship. In exchange, somehow, as humans, we are responsible for doing our best to give them the most balanced life by also respecting a structure and the specific list of needs (of their species). By just understanding a few aspects of their needs, it will help us both in life … so the question is: How to be the best human for your dog?
If we start with the ideal version of a happy dog’s day, half of it would be dedicated to sniffing and searching for food. A quarter (or so) would be dedicated to being busy chewing on stuff, playing, exploring, grooming themselves … and the rest? Sleeping!
Fundamentally, dogs have basic needs to survive, just like we do. They need air, water, food, a safe environment, shelter and sleep. That's just a given. Beyond these fundamentals, they need diversity and regularity in their activities … and maybe a comfy sofa! Hahahaha!
Yes, they also have different and sometimes specific needs depending on their age, size, breed, genetics, and/or health condition AND also determined by the individual he or she is !
Three of the first needs are : biological physical and mental. Talking about the biological needs, they need to be fed and taken out! Feeding is best twice per day (or 3 times if its a puppy) with any extra food taken from this total for specific purposes, like rewards during training sessions or enrichments along the day. The outings now: the first one will be when the dog wakes up and the last one, the latest possible and long enough to empty the tank :)) ensuring a good night sleep! In between: there should be at least 2 more. And 1 of the 2 must last a lot longer than a quick 20 minute bio break … and include some off leash free run and socialization time. More on this last point coming soon.
About this physical need; some of my clients feel bad not to have a house with a yard where their dogs can run all day. In reality! it is nice but it isn’t a must have … to have a dog. The must, though, is to go explore outside - and out of the garden too! if there is one ... So, it's really OK to have a dog in an apartment. It’s OK: as long as dogs do take enough outings along the day, like I mentioned before.
It’s important to understand that (sooner or later) the lack of physical exercise and mental stimulation might well develop into health and/or behavioral issues. In some countries like Switzerland, it is strictly forbidden by law to leave an animal in a crate for more than 2 hours in a row, without a major reason, like health issues or having to transport the dog. It’s also illegal to restrict your dog in a single place and have him or her stay alone and bored all day long.
And, so? What can we do and how can we ensure our dog’s basic needs are fulfilled when we work all day and cannot take him or her out during 6 or more hours?
