Spacetime, as described by general relativity, is ultimately incompatible with quantum field theory: our current best model of matter and fundamental, non-gravitational interactions. Given that particles not only move according to the geometrical properties of spacetime, but also influence them due to their non-trivial energy density, said incompatibility calls for a solution. Namely, it requires us to formulate a theory of quantum gravity and compare it with relevant empirical data. Daniele Oriti is exploring the idea that space and time, on top of possessing all the weird properties of quantum phenomena, might also be nothing more than emergent properties, coming from more fundamental and yet-unknown entities.
