Wake up babe, new Qubb level dropped!
Ok so first of all, this kinda doesn't have anything to do with the level, but at this point I'm almost more comfortable calling them "Fonter" cuz how the actual fuck do you pronounce Qubb bruh
Is it like "Cube"?
Is it like "Cub"?
Sometimes I'd say it with a Greenlandic "q" / Arabic "ق " lmao
No actually it IS pronounced "Cube" (not sure why it's spelled that way) cuz ever since they changed their name to that, I don't think I've seen any other game mode being used other than Cube. Makes sense.
Although it does kinda make me wonder if this is only a singular era / phase / arc, kinda like when Porter Robinson went by Virtual Self to make a specific type of music. I dunno, maybe Qubb will revert back to being Fonter once this is over lmaoo
Secondly, just like last time, I uploaded late and now it's already rated. But this time it's my fault cuz I did record this before the rating, I just got sidetracked and ended up buying music plugins cuz of Black Friday, and fell asleep for like 7 hours before editing the damn thing lmao.
Aight let's talk about the level now.
It's pretty clear at this point that Qubb takes a ton of inspiration from Optical, and I'm not using the word "inspiration" lightly here, esp considering that "inspiration" in this community 9 times out of 10 just means a clone lmao. The inspiration I'm talking about here doesn't involve taking specific designs or stuff like that but moreso has to do with the way the level is put together as a whole:
BGs consisting of two-tone patterns switching between positive and negative space in a looping gif. Idk if there's a term for it.
FGs consisting of object interactions, often analogous to physical movements found in real life.
Every part includes only one type of effect or movement type (maybe one each), effectively putting the emphasis / focus on it.
Fluid transitions made of not only a CHAIN of movements, but multiple movements overlapping (in time) with each other.
The simple fact that absolutely NOTHING is static. Everything has some type of movement, even if it's very minor / subtle.
It's very refreshing tho cuz I do feel like this type of modern's been kinda dying out. It was super common back in like 2017 - 2019 but nowadays I don't see a lot of people doing this kinda simple, effect/movement-focused modern aside from Qubb, obsco, and RNBW. Two of em no longer build so lmaooo (RNBW pls come back we miss you, I hope ur ok ;-;)
Only thing I don't like was that transition at the drop, musical representation-wise. First time watching it I was like wtf was that lol.
I will say tho, the one thing I wish I could see more from Qubb, (and this is gonna sound harsh but I promise u I'm not being mean here) is diversity. And I'm saying this not to say that having a style is bad, but there's a difference between having a style and having a comfort zone. I know that gets conflated a lot, so I rarely see people criticizing anyone of that, at least here in the GD community. But I can assure you, this is not a GD problem, this happens everywhere.
Now, I don't wanna bring up Optical too much cuz Qubb is Qubb, but this is an example I'm gonna bring up, not because of the similarity between the two (cuz it's also not something exclusive to Opti, like at all). It's just the easiest example in general.
If you look at Opti, he's obv got a style, and everyone can tell when a level's made by Opti, right? But notice how in each and every single level that he dropped, there's always a very distinct (no pun intended) visual "theme" going on. Veto, Grapheme, Pinnacle, etc. Even if you don't know these levels, you can tell em apart.
I can't really say the same with Qubb, cuz I can only distinguish Qubb style as Qubb style, but if I didn't know any of these levels, I wouldn't be able to distinguish em.
That said, again, Qubb is still Qubb. As amazing as Opti was (and still is), I'm not gonna discredit what Qubb's done AS Qubb, yknow? Qubb got their own style as well, and it's been very clear since they went as "Fonter".
I mean, purely the fact Qubb's a creator in 2024 and Opti was a creator in 2017, Qubb's obviously gonna follow different conventions and do more advanced things. Even just looking at it from the fact Qubb's able to do all those things I mentioned from Opti, that says more about Qubb than it does about Opti or anyone else, for that matter. Cuz at the end of the day, it doesn't matter where you get your skill from or who else got the skill. The fact of the matter is, YOU HAVE IT.
Overall, phenomenal level and I'm genuinely mad that RobTop only gave this a feature and nothing higher. Like... come on Rob, spectacle isn't everything, let's be so real right now.
