EUROPE: An Episodic Series of Travel Films by Tyler Griffin
Episode 09: The Black Forest, Germany

The ninth of close-to thirty episodes showcasing our months of backpacking travel footage from the late months of 2021 thru 2022's new year; "Over the course of four months, experience over twelve foreign countries & twenty different locations alongside Daniel & Zane with myself."

In this episode:

After Munich & before going to Italy, we arrive into The Black Forest to see one of Europe's natural wonders. This forest lies in Southern Germany & is home to the popular & mythical fairytale of Hansel & Gretel. Daniel vlogs, I talk about music, we have a scene on a swing, we watch the stars, a friend writes a poem & we turn into animations.

“For months, for the first time in my life, I'd stray away from being in my box of a room, staring at a screen 'til the next morning. For the first tie since covid, I'd daily roam the outdoors to take in the sights & scenery, the warmth of the sunlight striking my face in the mornings, & in contrast, the brisk of the wintery night. For the first time, I'd pair the serotonin with uncovering new beats & melodies with the titles and imagery of their albums & covers. The wildly detailed symmetry of these lyrics with that combination of newfound freedom had hit my brain in JUST the right spot to create a sort-of soundtrack for this traveling portion of life, titled "euros." [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2HD...] I recall this exploration and make sense of how influential the music I'd listen to then, would become. While in The Black Forest, a friend from home sent me [Pedaling Backwards by Hayfitz]. My speaker would have it's song fill the air, perfectly refracting these vast & dense forested tones."

The Black Forest - A poem written by a dear friend, Kerry-Ann Herisse:

"Finally distanced from familiarity, we stand stunned at the work laid before us.

It's a new kind of peace here,

the type that seems too good to be true or the type that you silently hope sticks with you.

How wonderful it is to rest among one of Earth's sanctuaries?

In this place, where the sun kissed the grass through tall branches,

I can't help but feel this forest taking the same steady breaths as I am,

where I can open my arms, and look up, and feel comfortably small.

I don't mind feeling small here.

There's a lightness here;

our steps softened,

our laughs echoed,

our worries ran alongside glistening streams.

Perhaps this is where fairytales take their place,

being the perfect space for enchantment to take it's rest.

Light & steady, light & steady,

to walk in a dream without eyelids so heavy.

Light & steady, through the universe's mind,

I stand in an existence,

undisturbed,

and perfectly aligned."

This playlist makes up most of the soundtrack for this series as the films go on due to their relevance & discovery while traveling.
