someday. maybe someday long ago, maybe someday soon. somehow. your fingertips catching the dust of the rail as you descend a stairway of an unfamiliar house. the monkey bread mushy in your mouth as laughter fills the table on this thanksgiving evening. waking up laying right next to the most beautiful human beings on a hardwood floor with a sleeping bag between the two. and that snarky kid who makes things awkward in your group of four. and then being friendly towards him, you made a new friend. untitled moments are left blank for everyone; a slate, an unchecked box. memories that weren’t meant to exist. new york, boston, san francisco, touring across the country with a beautiful soul, hugging my best friend, nationals, kesem, scouts, my senior year of high school, those meaningful moments with family, parting with those who go off to college, saying goodbye to my dear cousin.
somehow, in some form, something made it clear that these things weren’t meant to happen, all for a reason that we will never be able to understand. for one moment, the world held it’s hands out to me. in the next, i found myself unable to breathe, being suffocated by it’s palms. there was grief, and there was terror, yet somehow, i found peace in the darkness of the world’s thick skin that enveloped my panicking breath. and moments of sunshine revealed themselves through the fingers. i see dancing and singing and laughter and decay and closure and beginnings with endings between them. i watch as i feel the growing heat around me cook me into something i wasn’t yet prepared to be. but as i peer through the cracks again, everyone is trapped. but we find peace through this. in being alone, we are together. every breath is felt. every scratch at the walls that enclose us in desperation is synchronized, and the light is now hitting our eyes. i can feel the air on the sweat of my fingertips. i can taste the joy as my smile spreads from cheek to cheek. i can see their smiles. i can see the joy. the hope. and man, it’s most beautiful thing that i have ever seen.
and despite it all, all of it,
there was still light.
