Zinc is a mineral essential for our health and participates in over 300 chemical reactions in our body. Like all minerals, we must obtain it from our diet.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Zinc has become very famous recently due to its important effect on our immunity, increasing our immune response. However, it goes far beyond that, being essential for the health of the skin, eyes, and heart, and can even lower glucose levels in diabetics because it participates in insulin metabolism.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As the video clearly shows, the key to a zinc-rich diet is, above all, dietary diversity, as it is found in a wide variety of sources, both animal and plant.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Zinc is abundantly distributed throughout the human body and among trace minerals, it ranks second only to iron. The human body has approximately 2 to 3 g of zinc, with the highest concentrations in the liver, pancreas (due to its role in insulin, as we mentioned), kidneys, bones, and muscles. Other tissues with high zinc concentrations include: eyes, prostate, sperm, skin, hair, and nails, which gives us a good idea of the range of functions of this mineral in our body. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
People following a vegetarian or vegan diet should be especially cautious and pay attention to their zinc levels (an extra tip I discuss in the video), since plant-based sources are less bioavailable than animal-based sources (as I explain in the video). However, other groups at risk for zinc deficiency include people with gastrointestinal diseases that reduce zinc absorption from food (such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease), pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with sickle cell anemia, and people who abuse alcohol, which helps to reduce the body's zinc stores.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Knowing and consuming zinc-rich foods in adequate proportions is essential to ensure our health and the proper functioning of all our systems, not just the immune system.
