Inside a Thoughtfully Designed Office Space Where Memories Come Alive | Office Tour |
Situated along a rapidly evolving commercial street in Calicut, this office designed by Common Ground transforms the ground floor of a residential building into a calm, light-filled workspace.
Designed to balance openness with privacy, the office responds to its busy urban context through a series of thoughtful spatial interventions. A basement and mezzanine were incorporated into the original structure to maximize usable space, while the overall design prioritizes natural ventilation, daylight, acoustic comfort, and flexible work environments over conventional office planning.
The arrival sequence sets the tone for the workspace. A four-panel entrance opens into a quiet foyer anchored by a bio pond, introducing a calming water element while acting as a natural buffer against street noise. Beyond this, the mezzanine workspace remains visually open and filled with daylight, encouraging collaboration and creating an egalitarian environment where the architecture supports interaction without hierarchy.
Meeting spaces and quieter work zones are positioned on the lower level, offering privacy without disconnecting from the rest of the office. Sliding glass partitions provide flexibility, while clerestory windows bring natural light deep into the interiors. Throughout the project, the relationship between openness and enclosure is carefully balanced, allowing the office to adapt to different modes of work.
A restrained material palette reinforces the project's understated character. Terrazzo flooring, polished concrete, coconut wood planks, and natural finishes create a tactile environment that feels contemporary yet rooted in local materiality. Rather than relying on decorative elements, the design demonstrates how light, texture, and spatial planning can shape an office that is both functional and calming.
