Privacy is often achieved by closing a home off. This house designed by Aavishkar Architects takes the opposite approach by using openness, landscape, and carefully framed spaces to create a home that feels expansive while remaining completely private.
Located in Edappally, Kochi, The Box House is a 7,000 sq.ft residence built within a dense residential neighbourhood where neighbouring buildings surround the site on three sides. Rather than treating these constraints as limitations, the design transforms them into opportunities through a carefully composed sequence of open volumes and landscaped buffers.
At the heart of the home is a partially covered double-height backyard that functions as the project's climatic and visual core. Dense planting creates a natural privacy screen while allowing daylight, cross ventilation, and uninterrupted views from the living spaces. This courtyard becomes the central element that connects every major room without compromising seclusion.
The ground floor follows a fluid open-plan layout where the foyer, guest lounge, family living, dining space, and kitchen transition naturally into one another. Instead of walls, subtle level changes, furniture arrangements, and material variations define each zone, maintaining openness while giving every space its own identity.
The interiors balance contemporary luxury with artistic expression. A customised Ganesha artwork welcomes visitors at the entrance, while carefully curated furniture, sculptural lighting, statement colours, and bespoke finishes give each room its own character. Large double-height volumes amplify natural light throughout the house, creating interiors that feel bright, spacious, and connected to the landscape beyond.
