Do We Have a Shark Problem?

There is no doubt that we need to have some sharks around to eat the weakest members of the schools, ensuring the survival of the fittest.

But I have been fishing for about 65 years now, and the shark depredation I am experiencing and hearing about in the last couple of years is the worst I have known.

I don’t advocate that we wipe them from the face of the ocean, but their numbers need to be managed, the same as the fish numbers are managed.

Fisheries change the size and bag limits to control the fish to make sure the fishery remains sustainable. I think they need to do the same for sharks, to keep their numbers manageable. If the shark population becomes too large, then they will also have a disproportionate effect on fish numbers.

I believe there are several factors involved in the increased shark population. Firstly, they are very protected, arguably more than necessary to maintain their population. Also, large factory ships are operating around our continent, depleting the food source of the sharks and forcing them to hunt closer to shore. As well as that, I also believe that the sharks are learning to follow boats and home in on the pings from our fish finders as a source of easy food.
