Did you know Valentine’s Day has a dark history? In 270 AD, the Roman Emperor Claudius the Cruel banned all weddings because young men did not want to leave their wives to become soldiers. But a Roman priest named Valentine felt this was unjust and took it upon himself to perform marriages in secret. When Claudius found out, he had Valentine beaten to death and decapitated on February 14th. It is said that while he was in jail awaiting his death, Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and wrote her a farewell note signing it “Your Valentine.” Now you know why we celebrate Valentine's Day.
