Area models are a great way to solve multiplication problems. With larger numbers, you're going to need to use four boxes in your area model and break up each of the two factors. 13 is the same as 10 + 3 and 19 is the same as 10 + 9. Now, you multiply to find four partial products. 10 x 10 is 100, 10 x 9 is 90, 10 x 3 is 30, and 3 x 9 is 27. Our final step in the area model is you add up all of your personal products. So, we'll add 100, 90 30, and 27 for a total of 247. You're going to take your 32 and break it up into 30 + 2 and you're going to take 45 and break that up into 40 + 5. Now, you multiply to get a partial product for each box. The final step is to add up all of your partial products and you come out with 1,440. Area models are a great way to multiply two digits by two digits.
