Celebrating Vyshyvanka Day!
May 18th marks Vyshyvanka Day. Vyshyvanka is the Ukrainian word for a traditionally styled embroidered shirt or dress in Ukraine’s national costumes. The shirt represents a symbol of unity of Ukrainian sovereignty, history, and culture. Since 2006, Ukrainians around the world have celebrated Ukraine’s rich culture and history by proudly wearing Vyshyvankas annually on the third Thursday of May.
In the early 20th century, Vyshyvanka became an important symbol of national identity for Ukrainians seeking independence from Russia. During the Soviet era, however, the wearing of traditional clothing was discouraged, and many aspects of Ukrainian culture were suppressed. Following Ukraine's independence in 1991, there was a renewed interest in traditional culture, including the wearing of Vyshyvanka.
In 2006, a group of Ukrainian students launched the first Vyshyvanka Day, encouraging people across the country to wear their embroidered clothing to celebrate their cultural heritage. Since then, Vyshyvanka Day has grown in popularity, with people in Ukraine and around the world taking part in the celebration. The holiday has become an important symbol of Ukrainian pride and identity. As Russia maintains its illegal invasion of Ukraine since February 2022, it is more important than ever to stand in solidarity with Ukraine. Let’s use Vyshyvanka Day as an opportunity to show our solidarity with the Ukrainian people and pay tribute to their remarkable resistance.
