The ‪@surreybc‬ was the first jurisdiction to officially ban single-use plastics in Metro Vancouver. Previous to the ban, which took effect October 19, 2021, an estimated 25.6 million single-use bags were disposed of per year as well as 7.3 million styrofoam containers and cups. Since then, businesses and residents have worked to reduce this number. More than 95% of businesses in Surrey have made a transition from using plastic bags, foam cups and containers to alternative more sustainable items.

Metro Vancouver is a federation of 21 municipalities, one electoral area and one treaty First Nation that collaboratively plans for and delivers regional-scale services. Its core services are drinking water, wastewater treatment and solid waste management.
