Smiley Astable Multivibrator
In this video I build a simple smiley freeform circuit sculpture without any PCB. I took the inspiration for this project from the classic smiley form designed by Harvey Ball in 1963. I decided to use an astable multivibrator for building the circuit, which is a fundamental circuit of electrical-engineering and was first described by Henri Abraham and Eugene Bloch in 1919.
I use through-hole components for the sculpture. Some of the components I use in the circuit are picked up also for their shape not only for their electrical properties. You can calculate the frequency of the multivibrator using this formula f = 0.72/(RxC) which is in our case f = 0.72/(47000x0.000047) = 2.2 Hz.
I tested the circuit with 3.3V and 5V, but it’s also possible to use it with a little higher voltage. I use two lithium-ion batteries in parallel for the power supply, but it’s not a necessity. Because of very low power dispassion the sculpture should stay blinking for several months.
