【#PolyUResearch: Revolutionizing land reclamation via sustainable approach】
Land reclamation has always been essential for the development of Hong Kong due to its limited land resources and growing population. However, the current practice of land reclamation requires a significant amount of fill materials, 70% of which are from public fill and the remaining are from sea sand and manufactured sand. The demand for sand resources far outpaces the natural supply. Therefore, the pursuit of alternative materials to replace traditional fill materials not only can reduce costs but also promote sustainable development in land reclamation. 🌏
Professor Jian-hua YIN, #PolyU Chair Professor of Soil Mechanics from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has developed an innovative technique for land reclamation using local dredged Hong Kong marine deposits (HKMD) and wastes as fill materials. His research team used a combined ground improvement method to solve the problems of high initial water content, low-permeability, and low-bearing capacity of HKMD slurry to speed up the consolidation of HKMD slurry with existing seabed sediments. They then tested how to further strengthen dredged HKMD with two types of waste materials. The research team has recently conducted an on-site trial in a testing pit at the Tung Chung New Town extension project🎛️, which successfully affirmed the potential of using dredged HKMD as a fill material for land reclamation, and demonstrated the viability of the combined ground improvement technique.
