PolyU began deep space related research when Professor Yung Kai-leung teamed up with PolyU’s Industrial Centre to transform a dentist’s forceps into a tool for precision space soldering on a Russian space station in 1994. That innovative start has brought PolyU the subsequent opportunities to contribute to the success of China’s Chang’e-3, -4 and -5 missions to the Moon and the Tianwen-1 mission to Mars. The team was tasked with designing and manufacturing various space instruments for the missions, while Professor Wu Bo’s integrated 3D mapping modelling techniques also proved to be essential to identifying the best landing spots.
