Tadeuš Kasciuška / Tadas Kosciuška (Andrew Thaddeus Bonaventure Kościuszko (1746-1817) was born in February 1746 in the village of Mereczowszczyzna (now Merachouschyna [Мерачоўшчына], Belarus), a folwark near the town of Kosów Poleski (now Kosava, Belarus). He is a national hero in Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and the United States, who fought in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's struggles against Russia and the Kingdom of Prussia and on the American side in the American Revolutionary War.
He wrote: "Am I not a Litwin and your fellow countryman?..." ("Litwin/Litvin, literally, "a Lithuanian citizen")
