Save the internet from the new attempt slowly becoming reality of a massive censorship.
While based on a good idea - that of paying creators more for their work - the truth is "The European Union Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market" contains articles that will benefit only the big companies due to vague definitions that will lead to wide interpretation in favor of the giants.
These articles will make platforms responsible for anything and everything uploaded by it's users and creators from the moment of upload, meaning automatic software has to be implemented. This software is unable to determine what is karaoke, a movie review, a react, parody or top 5 video. It can be so ridiculous that even birds filmed in nature can lead to a ban if similar songs have been use in a movie at some point.
Our main concern is many of our favorite channels will be banned due to the nature of the videos uploaded if they are from a European country, due to them featuring images or sounds about / featuring articles that may be present in some place owned by a big company.
Even memes will be a thing of the past in most cases, as they use pictures of actors or famous people.
The idea is that bans will be first, and explanations will be accepted after, not the other way around.
And in fact, due to the posibility of being draged in countless lawsuits beacuse of repetead breaches of this new rule, platforms like youtube and facebook may simply decide to leave the EU market, taking with them the things we love (a place to publish our work, to share with our friends, to follow our favorite creators).
Similar attempts to apply censorship have been attempted with ACTA, SOPA, PIPA and they have all failed. We need to make sure this one does as well.
What can YOU do ?
1)So what can we do?
Raise awareness: tell people what’s going on. The more people know about this, the better.
2) Sign the petition below, it already has 4 million:
https://www.change.org/p/european-par...
3) If you live in the EU, write to your MEPs: they will have the final vote. Send them an email and ask them to vote against this legislation. You can find them here: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/meps/en...
There is a lot of opposition for article 13, from online platforms, big film associations and sport leagues so we are not alone in this fight! ( https://juliareda.eu/…/Audiovisual-an... )
We can still stop this. But only if we act NOW!
