Having found his feet as a ghost producer for some of the industry’s leading tech house artists and labels, one ordinary day in the studio he stumbled into a vocal sample that would become the core of his track The Shake. Thinking that it was too good to sign over to another artist, Ellis Moss wanted to release this track as his own, and he was right to do so.
Despite being released in the throes of a pandemic, the bouncy tribal tech house number became a behemoth of the scene. Helped along by support from the likes of David Guetta, Danny Howard, Richie Hawtin, Toolroom Records’ own Mark Knight plus many more, The Shake made it to the prized Number One spot on Beatport.
This short-but-sweet course gives an overview of how the track came to be, and highlights the power of happy accidents in the studio. As with much of electronic music, the bassline is one of the core components and Moss is all too happy to oblige in sharing how he came to create and shape the low end of this track. He’s also eager to underline the importance of getting the arrangement right in this style of track.
From the spaceship that is the Toolroom studio, Moss works within Cubase, and capitalizes on some of the DAW’s most powerful plugins, including the inbuilt Multiband Envelope Shaper. Other plugins used in the course include Waves’ Jack Joseph Puig Vocals, used to process that earworm of a vocal loop. The Toolroom producer also makes frequent use of FabFilter Pro-Q3 for some simple EQing tasks, plus Cableguys Shaperbox for creating this style of house’s signature pumping sound.
