Cassia fistula is also called as the GOLDEN SHOWER or the INDIAN LABURNUM. The tree is called AMALTAS in Hindi, and BAHAVA in Marathi. The Indian Laburnum is native to the Indian subcontinent and is planted on the roadside for its decorative flowers.
The Cassia fistula is the National tree of Thailand.
The Cassia fistula is also the State flower of Kerala and it is of ritual importance during the VISHU Festival.
It is a medium sized tree. The leaves are deciduous. In March-April the leaves shed and the tree is a riot of yellow flowers. The flowers are produced in pendulous racemes – hanging down like yellow chandeliers.
The fruit is a 2-feet long legume. The pipe shaped fruit is green when young but turns dark brown with age. Because of the pipe like shape of the fruit the tree is also called as the PUDDING PIPE TREE.
