Why Do Monkeys Still Exist If We Evolved From Them?
If Evolution is real why are there still monkeys today
If evolution is real, why are there still monkeys around?
It’s a common question asked by many that sparks curiosity. These questions get asked because of the presumptions and misconceptions we all have about evolution process.
The truth is, evolution doesn’t mean that all species must change into one another or that older species disappear. Evolution is not linear and not so direct, so the drawing of a hunched-over chimp next to a
standing ape, and a spear-carrying human that we all see in pictures and videos are misleading way to view evolution.
Instead we must think of evolution as a branching tree. Humans and modern monkeys share a common ancestor, and we are cousins but not the direct child.
On the tree of evolution, our branch has been separated from chimps for millions of years. So we didn’t evolve directly from chimps down a linear path.
So we can say that humans and chimps both evolved from a common ancestor that lived around 6 to 7 million years ago. Our common ancestor slowly evolved over time in response to different environmental pressures and eventually gave rise to the two species we define as Homo sapiens and chimpanzees today.
The split between great apes and monkeys branches dates even further back to some 25 million to 30 million years ago.
We know it existed, because humans and chimps share a surprising 98.8 percent of their DNA.
Now other apes and monkeys are perfectly adapted to their environments, just as we are to ours. They play crucial roles in their ecosystems, from seed dispersal to maintaining forest health. Evolution is about survival and adaptation, and not a linear progression. So, while we took one path, monkeys took another, thriving in their own unique ways. That is why we still find monkeys today.
