On the evening of April 18, 1974, the Red Brigades launched "Operation Sunflower": Mario Sossi, a magistrate and public prosecutor in the October 22nd Group Trial, was kidnapped while returning home. The Red Brigades demanded the release of eight terrorists, but negotiations fell through. Fortunately, Sossi was released, but only after a month of captivity, on May 23, 1974.
Franceschini, a founder of the Red Brigades along with Renato Curcio and Mara Cagol, was one of the main organizers and mediators of the kidnapping. Arrested in 1974 by the Carabinieri led by General Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, he was released in 1992 despite a long sentence.
In 1982, he publicly dissociated himself from the armed struggle.
He died on April 11, 2025, at the age of 78.
The interview was conducted by Sergio Zavoli for the program "La notte della Repubblica," which aired in January 1990.
