A short taste of my AI/AR show at the Far Out Gallery which ran from January 20 to February 25, 2024.
Far Out Gallery is proud to present Out of Chaos | Decoding the Obvious, created by media artist, John Sanborn. This interactive work is an AI/AR platform developed by Sanborn in order to exhibit video works, without hanging screens, or providing quick answers to challenging subjects.
Instead, the viewer is greeted by 44 still images, generated using Artificial Intelligence, that are each a single “instance” of a larger swarm of story elements, which Sanborn wrote and then exploded into 44 fragments. Each still image is a trigger for its own video clip, which is activated by scanning the image using the EyeJack Augmented Reality app on their phone or mobile device. Since there is no fixed order in which each still must be scanned, the viewer assembles their own version of this “story”, left to decode the significance of each “instance” in relation to its companion still, and how the pieces fit together.
This experience was motivated by Sanborn’s realization that most of life is mysterious, as in “why are we alive?” Because obvious answers are in short supply, we each narrate our own existence. Because from “instance” to “instance” we are left dangling, wanting to what’s next, we must embrace each in-between feeling- to make patterns from noise.
