Life is a story of deception whose complexity becomes more apparent as we give way to entropy. Everything we think of as solid and dependable is actually fleeting and ephemeral. Rather than find faults in cracks, tears and other imperfections, the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi encourages us to appreciate that nothing is truly perfect or permanent, and to embrace reality to survive and thrive. There is a lesson to be learned in shifting our gaze from the surface to the essential– to find worth and purpose in what appears to be in conflict, but is in fact a complete state of being.

John Sanborn’s video for Simon Goff’s “NOW THEIR PAIN IS SUGAR” uses a combination of lidar and photometric scanning to produce instant 3D models of performers Sarah Cecilia Bukowski and Paunika Jones. Their slow, but defined, movements tricks the functionality of the scans, to suggest the complexities of the wear and tear of living. They are at once, pain and sugar.
