This action can serve as a form of territory marking, as feces contain pheromones that convey important information about the dog’s identity, sex, age, and reproductive status, helping to establish their presence to other animals. By defecating on elevated surfaces, dogs ensure their scent is more widely dispersed and more easily detected by others. Dogs may also develop a preference for certain locations due to habit or comfort, or they may mimic the behavior of other dogs in their environment. Additionally, domestic dogs retain instincts from their wild ancestors, such as wolves and foxes, who often use vertical surfaces to communicate with their pack. Stress or anxiety can also trigger such behavior, as some dogs may mark with feces to feel secure. While this behavior is generally natural and not harmful, it can become problematic if excessive or inappropriate.
