The mother dog licks the puppy's abdomen and genital area, which helps to trigger the reflexes needed for urination and defecation. This behavior is essential for the puppy's digestion and overall health during the early stages of life. If the mother is not present or unable to do this, a human caregiver must gently stimulate the puppy with a warm, damp cloth to mimic the mother's actions.
