I am a nephrologist for 45 years, in Porto Alegre, south Brasil.. During all this time, for many times we try to help our patients teaching how to improve their quality of life. We repeatdly talk about amount of water to drink, liquids excess, exercise, and food. Less than1 year ago, a 89 yo patient told me: please don't tell what I can not eat, say just what I can eat. That was the first time that I had this appeal. Yes, we say don't eat for example: star fruit! They don't even know it Don't eat this or that because there is too much potassium . They say: I don't like it. In festive days they are corcerned about what to eat. That is why we started a program in our hemodialysis facilitiy: getting together with small groups with one person of the family to teach how to eleborate some kind of menu, every 2 months. The program was named Nutri Renal. We had a collaborative group to cook (spontaneously) with doctors, nutritionists, nurses (multidisciplinary group) for them. An opportunity to clarify doubts, to know new and different spices instead of salt. It was a great experience for everybody (patients an assistance group). They were very happy to share their difficulties and situation. It was a moment to see that they are not alone. We plan to continue this pleasant and gratefying action.
